This great wine is the worthy representative of the “mountain” of Gigondas.

This dense, structured, textured yet fresh wine captures fully the character of grapes produced by our oldest vines, growing on the limestone scree at the base of the Dentelles de Montmiral, between 300 and 500 meters in altitude. It too is vinified on whole clusters.

‘Le Font de Tonin,’ completely aged in barrel (a small part of which is new oak), shortly after bottling shows no marked presence of wood at all, revealing a wine that is powerful and rich yet pure and fresh, wrapped in smooth tannins. Its ability to evolve beautifully over the years is remarkable.

A special selection of older-vine fruit from the highest part of the vineyard (and appellation). ‘La Font de Tonin’ means “fountain (or source) of Antonin,” a tribute to the estate founder (and winemakers’ father).

An elegant, concentrated wine, produced only in the best of years, one that will age 10 to 15 years with grace.

BLEND: 99% Grenache and 1% Mourvèdre

VINEYARDS: ‘La Font de Tonin’ is a special selection of older vines sitting between 900 and 1,500 feet in altitude, from estate vineyards in the Dentelles de Montmirail, a row of steep limestone cliffs west of Mont Ventoux. Top soils are thin and very rocky; sub-soils are solid rock.

AGE OF VINES: 70 years, on average

WINEMAKING: Hand-harvested. Full-cluster, lightly crushed; fermented on indigenous yeasts in cement tanks. Aged in French oak barrels for 12 months (20% new, 50% three-year, 10% five-year, and 20% seven-year barrels). Unfined and unfiltered, minimal added sulfites.

TASTING IMPRESSIONS: Aromas of black fruits, pink and white peppers; flavors of blackberries and blue plums. Unctuous texture, silky tannins.

PAIRING SUGGESTIONS: Grilled steak, spicy pork sausages, North African inspired cuisine, such as spiced lamb tagine.

Sweet and focused on the palate, highlighting deeply concentrated, lively spice-accented boysenberry, cherry liqueur and floral pastille flavors. The floral and spice notes carry emphatically through the youthfully tannic finish, which gives superb energy and lift.
