Domaine Arlaud Roncevie Bourgogne 2021
Roncevie is surrounded by villages-level vines of Gevrey-Chambertin, and shares essentially identical exposition and soils. The estate founder, Joseph Arlaud (Cyprien’s grandfather), planted Pinot Noir vines here in 1964 and 1965. The 12-acre plot was at the time rated Gevrey villages; it was reclassified as Bourgogne Rouge a year later.
TASTING IMPRESSIONS: Aromas of blueberries, raspberries and irises. Medium-bodied and juicy, with a hint of baking spices on the finish.
AGE OF VINES: 60+ year old vines
WINEMAKING: Hand-harvested. Destemmed; fermented on indigenous yeasts in cement tanks. Aged in older French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, according to the lunar cycle.
PAIRING SUGGESTIONS: Autumn flavors, such as pork roast with chestnuts, wild mushrooms
Domaine Arlaud Père et Fils is a reference point for natural Burgundy wines. The singular experience each organically raised cuvée offers is a revelation for even the most experienced palates.
In the cellar, intervention is kept to an absolute minimum. Under Cyprien’s stewardship, elegance has been the focus, with lower levels of extraction and the reduction of new wood to zero on the Bourgogne and 15-30% on the rest of the lineup.
Their cellar in Morey St. Denis is one of the coldest in the Côtes de Nuits, helping Cyprien pursue a slow, non-interventionist vinification, with minimal use of SO2. All of his wines are also bottled unfined and unfiltered. Meeting Cyprien makes it clear how in touch he is with every meter of vines he farms.
