Château Pavie Esprit de Pavie Bordeaux 2019
Esprit de Pavie is the creation of Gerard Perse, the visionary owner of Chateau Pavie in St Emillion, having produced no less than five 100 point wines at the Pavie estate.
He and his team could have sat smugly on their laurels, instead they set out to make a more democratic bottle of Bordeaux for wider enjoyment, Esprit de Pavie is made from young vines from all of Perse’s estate’s, including Pavie, this is definitely a smart case of wine to add to the cellar, given the provenance and price, it’s a Bordeaux to snap up for fun and future.
Appellation
Bordeaux
Geological characteristics
Esprit de Pavie comes from a great diversity of terroirs situated on the south-facing slopes of the Dordogne valley, which can be characterized by three types of soil:
– Sandy-gravely foothills
– Clay hillsides
– Clay-limestone plateau
Vinification
Alcoholic fermentation begins naturally in temperature controlled tanks. After several weeks of vatting, malolactic fermentation is made in tank. The wines are aged 18 months: 50% concrete vats, 50% wine barrels which have already been used once for Château Pavie and Château Monbousquet.
Reviews
James Suckling – “A fruity and refined wine with blackberry, black-chocolate and subtle berry and spice character. Medium body, medium tannins and a succulent finish. 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Mostly from grapes of Castillon with some vats from top estates. Delicious now, but can age.” (92 Pts)
Wine Spectator – “A fresh version, with cassis and bitter plum flavors that stretch out nicely, this is flecked with savory and violet notes along the way. The slightly taut structure adds some length. Drink now through 2029.” (90 Pts)
