Gail Wines was founded by winemaker, Dan O’Brien. A native of Rhode Island, Dan grew up working behind the bar of some of Providence’s top restaurants. His love of wine drew him to Boston where he began a decade long career as a sommelier – a career that ultimately took Dan west to California where he went on to manage estate-grown wineries in Napa and Sonoma.
Thanks to the support and encouragement of his mentors over the years, Dan produced his first vintage of Gail in 2013. Today, with an adventurous California spirit and a nod to European tradition, Dan produces eponymous wines in memory of his mother. Everything is grown in the Sonoma Valley, a place she would have considered paradise.
Gail wines are whole expressions of timeless varietals, exhibited through the lens of California’s oldest terroir, the Sonoma Valley. They are produced with the knowledge gained through mentorship and the osmosis that occurs after many years of stocking, buying, selling, traveling, tasting and harvest work. They are not informed by any movement, trend or formal education in winemaking.
Fermentations are spontaneous. Wines age sur-lie in a blend of large cask and neutral oak barrels without movement or manipulation.
