Claré JC is a Nebbiolo made according to a 1606 note by Gian Battista Croce, the jeweler of the House of Savoia. This wine is a time-capsule into an era when Nebbiolo wines tasted fresher, slightly crisp and smooth.

This is a wine for people who are young at heart and curious about the forgotten past of Piemonte.

Produced with grapes from younger vines of Nebbiolo, Claré JC is our take on the forgotten days of Nebbiolo, when it was vinified and enjoyed in its lighter and fresher garment.

The wine is bottled soon after the fermentation so as to retain a gentle off-dry finish and a lovely energy.

A few years ago, Darrell Corti of the venerable Corti Brothers market in Sacramento, a great friend and one of the original American supporters of the wines of Aldo Vaira, brought the quote by Thomas Jefferson to his attention. Giuseppe Vaira, Aldo, and the whole family were intrigued by the challenge put forth by Darrell Corti to make a wine like that of 250 years ago. So after much trial and error, G.D. Vajra has come out with a wine that is in the spirit of Thomas Jefferson (the J. in the Claret J.C.) with help and inspiration from Darrell Corti (the C. in the Claret J.C.).

The wine is 100% Nebbiolo, made in the Metodo Ancestrale, meaning fermentation starts in the tank on the skins and finishes in the bottle and is thus a sparkling wine. Slightly off-dry, high in acid, fully red and slightly tannic from the Nebbiolo grape, this wine is fresh and lively in the mouth but finishes with finesse and length. Meant to take a chill, it is best paired with Italian salumi or any dish that needs a good acidic wine with grip to clear the palate.

VINEYARD AND TERROIR: Fruit from our young Nebbiolo vineyards.

HARVEST AND WINEMAKING: Approximately one fifth of the fruit was whole cluster fermented. After a short maceration, the wine was racked to finish fermentation off the skins so as to preserve some natural freshness.

AGING: Very short aging in a close stainless steel vat prior to bottling.

TASTING NOTES: The 2025 GD Vajra Claré JC Nebbiolo opens with a fragrant bouquet of strawberries, fresh cherries, red currant, raspberry, grapefruit, nutmeg and fresh roses. On the palate, it is bright and juicy, rich in red fruit, with very soft tannins and a gentle almond note alongside a playful hint of bubble gum. A joyful, harmonious wine, equally delightful served slightly chilled.
