“This one is going to be a Lost Cause classic, I’m calling it right now. I absolutely love this mead.

Many of our melomels are “waterless” meads (meaning it’s just honey and fruit), and this one is no different. We started with pressed Gravenstein apple juice from @thefivemileorchard in Corralitos, CA, near where I grew up, and mixed it with Sweet Clover Blossom honey from Wayne Gibbons (IYKYK). Then we sourced the figs, dates and raisins from around California, with a focus on specific varietals that would play well together and create something special.

The inspiration for this cyser actually came from all the years I spent judging Mazer Cup entries. Every year there was a cyser that blew me away… sometimes it was a commercial entry, sometimes a home entry. It was the one style I fell in love with after tasting how well it could be done in other parts of the country and world.

And yes, we’ve done cysers before, but never with such a focus on sourcing the perfect apple. Gravenstein apples have a uniquely wonderful balance of acidity and fruitiness with intense aromatics, and they really shine in this cyser, even with all the other fruit we added. It allowed us to create something complex and decadent yet still unmistakably apple-forward.

Malum is Latin for both “evil” and “apple”, and our label artist kylersuchey took that inspiration to create a beautiful label featuring Eris, the Greek goddess of strife and her golden apple of discord. It’s a true work of art just like the liquid inside.”

Tasting notes: apple skin, raisins, cinnamon, Martinelli’s juice, leather and caramel. Medium-full bodied with noticeable tannins and acidity for balance, and subtle booziness. This cyser is delicious now and was also built to cellar for a long, long time, if you can hold off drinking all your bottles.
