Old Speckled Hen has a superb rich malty and fruity aroma. Experience a wonderful warming flavor bursting with body. Malty (malt loaf) toffee flavors from the pale and crystal malts combine with bitterness on the back of the tongue to give balanced sweetness which is not cloying. This is followed by a dry finish.
Old Speckled Hen is a great choice for those who enjoy a rich, creamy beer. One taste and you’ll see why “Old Speckled Hen” is England’s Number One most loved Premium English Ale.
Old Speckled Hen was first brewed in Abingdon, Oxfordshire to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory. But why “Old Speckled Hen”? Well, the name is a derivative of “owld speckled un”, a term used to describe a paint-splattered MG car used as a factory run-around.
Tasting Notes
A high proportion of Crystal malt in Old Speckled Hen provides the key toffee/caramel flavor. The yeast used to ferment the beer provides the other key character – estery or banana/pear drop. This estery note provides the fruity and refreshing balance. The hops used add a palate cleansing herbal note and very slight orange citrus. A very malty, full bodied and warming ale.
