Picchioni Solinghino 2020
Buttafuoco DOC
Grapes: 60% Croatina, 30% Barbera, 10% Ughetta di Canneto
Solinghina is the entry-level still red wine in Picchioni’s range.
While it appears to be simple, fun and fruity at the onset, serious complexity emerges with some time after opening. This depth comes from the ground that makes up Buttafuoco’s original historic hillside, which has been written about in centuries past, along with neighboring steep vineyards on the same south-facing ridge.
Terroir: Oltrepò Pavese is located in the far southwestern corner of Lombardia, a sort of appendage that is scrunched between Piemonte and Emilia Romagna. The communes of Buttafuoco are located about 100 miles directly east of Torino and 40 miles south of Milano, within two valleys.
Picchioni’s organically farmed Buttafuoco vineyards are steep and mostly face south and southwest and reach altitudes of up to 220 meters, prime for still red wines. The Solinga valley is full of wild, dense forest and this is felt and tasted in the nuances and energy of his wines.
Aging: Aged in entirely in concrete vats for eight months. There is no fining but a light filtration is made at bottling.
