Proelio Vinedos Viejos Garnacha 2019
This remarkable wine derives from 18 micro-plots of 80 year-old head-trained vines in and around the commune of Cárdenas. The iron-rich soils there imbue it with coiled power and striking flavour. Better on the second day than the first, suggesting long life ahead, the stamp of Rioja seems stronger than that of Garnacha. None of which is as important as the simple tastiness and class of the wine.

Reviews
Wine Enthusiast – “Nuanced and complex, while aromatic and even floral on the nose, flavors of mixed dark fruits, beautifully integrated spices, and a pleasing earthy note deliver a pretty yet lush, refined while flavorful Garnacha from older vines and higher elevation. ” (93 Pts)
Tim Adkins – “Proelio’s “entry-point” Garnacha uses equal proportions of grapes from high-altitude vineyards in Badarán and Cardenas between 600 and 700 metres. Aged in large foudres, it’s a crunchy, sappy, effortlessly concentrated red that doesn’t show the heat of the vintage, with raspberry and red cherry fruit and savoury tannins.” (93 Pts)
James Suckling – “Aromas of blueberries, black cherries and raspberries with hints of cured meat, licorice and bark. Medium-to full-bodied with firm tannins and a juicy mouth-feel. Crunchy and savory pomegranate notes with a silky texture and a fresh, fruity finish.” (92 Pts)
