Winemaker’s Notes
Walter Hansel Cahill Lane Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018
The winery uses only natural yeast during fermentation. Fining and filtration are minimal. The Pinots are held on the lees without racking for 12 months. None of the wine is aged on entirely new oak. One-and two-year-old barrels are always employed.
VINEYARD
Cahill Lane is a vineyard-designated blend of 3 one-acre blocks that sit next to Stephen Hansel’s house on Cahill Lane. The blocks are comprised of 3 separate French clones, and the vines yield a miniscule 2 to 2¼ tons per acre. This wine, more than any of the other Hansel Pinots, is known for its gorgeous floral aromas and dark, inky color.
SOIL
Goldridge loam
VITICULTURE
The fruit is hand harvested and manually sorted-once in the vineyard and once at the sorting table in the winery.
VINIFICATION
The Pinot Noir is destemmed and the whole berries are gravity fed into open top fermenters.
AGING
60% new French oak
801 cases produced. Bottled 1/9/20
