WINEMAKING / VITICULTURE
Fruit was harvested from 16 year old vines in exceptional vineyard sites from our GV
vineyard. The vineyard is of sandy soils, with excellent draining providing ideal conditions
for growing high quality fruit. Tonnages were kept low, (approximately 3 tonnes/acre) to
allow for maximum quality and flavor. The must was fermented in static red fermenters
and pumped over every eight hours for the ferment’s duration. Once the ferment was dry,
the resulting wine was pressed off the skins and allowed to settle prior to spontaneous
secondary fermentation. Separate parcels of the wine spent between 6 and 12 months in
French oak barriques, after which the final blending of select parcels took place. The
resulting wine exhibits lovely red fruit characters, with hints of blackcurrant and chocolate.
The palate has exceptional length of flavor with good tannins which will allow the wine to
cellar for the next ten years.
JO’S HARVEST NOTES
Vintage 2017 is best described as a waiting game. The season was very long with fruit
slow to ripen and although the urge just to pick it all was there, we had to bide our time
until we had optimal flavors and ripeness. Once I made the decision to pick the grapes
came in at an orderly pace, although increased yields due to the rain in spring made the
juggling game in the winery even more challenging, with tank space at a premium. We
made it through our marathon 2017 vintage and are thrilled with the exceptional quality
including a number of really extraordinary parcels.
JO’S WINE DESCRIPTION
This medium bodied wine displays notes of rich black fruits and berries complemented with
elegant oak and a nuance of chocolate. Perfectly balanced, with a firm, smooth tannin
structure, the wine finishes with an enduring length of ripe fruit and cedary oak.
JO’S FOOD MATCHES
Try this wine with a hearty barbecued steak, short ribs, or a mushroom pizza with spicy
tomato sauce to heat things up a little!
James Suckling – “Lots of currant and blackberry character with hints of slate and dark tea. Full body. Soft and silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink now or hold.” (93 Pts)
