François Chidaine Clos du Breuil 2023
Chidaine’s holdings here include several plots spread over 3.5 hectares, each varying slightly on a typical Montlouis theme of clay and silex over chalk. The vines average about 40 years of age, although the oldest ones are 80 years old, and this is always made as a dry wine (normally 2-4 g/l of sugar).
It’s racy and extremely minerally, one of the classiest dry chenins of the area.
Grape variety
Chenin Blanc (Pineau de Loire)
Vine growing
The vineyard is managed biodynamically. No chemical phytosanitary products are used. Honey-producing or nematicide plants or cereals are sown in the rows. The preparations used come only from processed plant, animal and mineral materials.
Soils
The soil is composed of clay and coarse flint elements. The subsoil is made up of Tuffeau, a soft, white limestone rock through which the roots create a passage.
Winemaking
After pressing, alcoholic fermentation is carried out by indigenous yeasts in demi-muids, wooden barrels with a capacity of 620 liters. It can last up to six months. “Malolactic fermentation” is not sought. Aging is carried out on fine lees, always in demi-muids.
Reviews
Wine Spectator – “The 2023 François Chidaine Clos du Breuil is a stunning example of Chenin’s range and appeal. Green fig and crunchy melon are open and inviting, layered with a savory jolt of salty mineral, chive and sage notes. Cool minerality keeps pace with the fruit through the firm finish, supported by fine, piercing acidity. Silky, long and pure.” (93 Pts)
